Dignity, Comfort & Love for Our Elders

Our elder care mission

Old age should be a season of rest, not of worry

Growing old is hard enough; growing old alone — without family, income or care — is a quiet crisis in the neighbourhoods we serve. Elders skip medicines to afford food, sit through long days with nobody to talk to, and, in the worst cases, are left at temple gates and bus stands by families who cannot or will not care for them.

In 2021 Erakathin Uthavi opened a full-time residential care home in Ramanathapuram so that no elder in our community faces that fate. Residents receive a bed, two hot meals a day, a doctor every Tuesday, physiotherapy, and — just as important — a garden, a newspaper to argue over, and company at every meal. It is a home, not a shelter.

  • Why elder care mattersAn elder with food, medicines and company lives longer, healthier and with the dignity every life deserves.
  • The challenge our elders faceNo pension that stretches, medicines out of reach, and the loneliness of houses that have emptied out.
  • How Erakathin Uthavi helpsResidential care, meals, medical support, physiotherapy and companionship — funded rupee by receipted rupee.

What we do

Six ways we care for our elders

Run by caregivers and volunteers who treat every resident like their own grandparent — and every rupee is receipted and audited.

Residential Care Home

A safe, clean and permanent home for destitute and abandoned senior citizens — a bed of their own, laundry, daily assistance and a family of fellow residents around them.

Nutritious Meals

Two hot, balanced meals every day plus morning and evening tea — with special diets for diabetic and hypertensive residents, prepared fresh in our own kitchen.

Medical Care & Checkups

A doctor's clinic at the home every Tuesday, monthly medicines for chronic conditions, and hospital care arranged and accompanied whenever a resident needs it.

Physiotherapy & Mobility

Regular physiotherapy sessions, walking aids and gentle morning exercise in the garden — keeping joints moving, falls fewer and independence longer.

Companionship & Recreation

Newspapers, carrom, bhajans, birthday celebrations and festival days — volunteers who come to talk, read and listen, so no afternoon feels empty.

Emotional & Family Support

Counselling for residents, mediation with estranged families where reunion is possible, and a dignified farewell — with full rites — when a resident's journey ends.

Resident stories

Elders who found a home — and what changed

Each story is shared with the resident's consent; some names are changed to protect privacy.

Parvathi A., 74

Resident since 2022
Before
After her son moved abroad she lived alone, the house growing quieter and her medicines more irregular each month.
How she came to us
A neighbour called our office; a volunteer visited the same week and she chose to move in.
Life now
A garden to walk in, a doctor every Tuesday, and someone to argue about the newspaper with at breakfast.

In her words: "It is a home, not a shelter."

Krishnan V., 81

Resident since 2021
Before
A retired mill worker with no family, found sleeping outside a temple after his rented room was taken back.
How he came to us
One of our first residents — brought in by volunteers the month the care home opened.
Life now
Regular meals and physiotherapy steadied his health; today he leads the morning exercise in the garden.

Today: The home's unofficial gardener — the roses by the gate are his.

Saraswathi R., 69

Resident since 2023
Before
A widow with severe arthritis, she had quietly stopped buying her medicines when her savings ran out.
How she came to us
Referred from our free health camp, where a volunteer doctor noticed she was skipping treatment.
Life now
Monthly medicines, twice-weekly physiotherapy, and the kitchen's most trusted taste-tester.

Today: Walking without her stick for the first time in four years.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Everything families, donors and volunteers usually ask about our old age support.

Who can be admitted to the care home?

Senior citizens from Coimbatore district who are destitute, abandoned, or whose families genuinely cannot care for them. A volunteer visits and verifies each situation, and our committee approves admission based on need alone — never on religion, caste or community.

How do I request admission for an elder?

Call +91 93626 29234, send a message from our contact page choosing "Old age care", or visit our Ramanathapuram office. A volunteer will visit the elder, usually within a week, and guide the family through the process.

Can I visit the care home?

Yes — visitors are welcome every day from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. If you'd like a guided visit, to celebrate an occasion with the residents, or to bring a group, call ahead and we'll arrange it.

How do I sponsor an elder?

Call us or send a message from our contact page. We match you with a resident, and your monthly contribution of ₹2,500 covers their food, medicines and daily care. You receive updates twice a year — and you're always welcome to visit.

Can I volunteer at the care home?

Gladly. Volunteers read with residents, lead games and bhajans, help at mealtimes and accompany doctor visits. Register on our volunteer page and our Volunteer Coordinator will call you within 48 hours.

How are donations utilised?

Funds go towards food, medicines, caregiver salaries and upkeep of the home — every rupee receipted. Erakathin Uthavi is registered under Section 80G; receipts are emailed within 48 hours, and our full audited annual report is published every April.
