Our education mission

A classroom seat should never depend on a family's income

Education is the surest road out of poverty — every completed school year raises a child's lifetime earnings and, more importantly, their belief in what is possible. Yet in the neighbourhoods we serve, that road is blocked by things most of us never think about: an unpaid term fee, a worn-out uniform, a bus fare, a home with no desk and no light to study by.

When a parent loses work or a family faces a medical bill, the first sacrifice is almost always a child's schooling — and a child who leaves rarely returns. Erakathin Uthavi stands in that gap. We pay the fee before the deadline passes, put the books in the school bag, arrange evening tuition, and keep showing up until the child graduates.

  • Why education mattersEvery year in school compounds — into confidence, income, and choices for the whole family.
  • The challenge our children faceFees, uniforms, transport and lost study time push children out of classrooms that are rightfully theirs.
  • How Erakathin Uthavi helpsScholarships, supplies, digital access, tuition and mentoring — from first standard to first job.

What we do

Six ways we keep children learning

Every programme is run by volunteers who live in the neighbourhoods they serve — and every rupee is receipted and audited.

Scholarship Programme

Financial support for school and college education — term fees, exam fees and admission costs paid directly to the institution, so nothing stands between a capable student and their seat.

School Supplies

Books, notebooks, uniforms, school bags and stationery, delivered before the term begins — so every child walks in on day one carrying the same things as their classmates.

Digital Learning

Computers, tablets, internet access and guided online courses — closing the digital divide so a child's postcode never limits what they can learn.

Tuition & Mentoring

After-school tuition centres and one-to-one mentoring by volunteer teachers — homework help, exam preparation and a trusted adult who believes in the child.

Skill Development

Personality development, spoken English, communication and career guidance workshops — the confidence and soft skills that turn marks into opportunities.

Infrastructure Support

Classroom furniture, library shelves and learning materials for under-resourced government schools — because a good classroom lifts every child who sits in it.

Kavya M.

Ramanathapuram · Sponsored since 2019
Background
Eldest of three; her mother supports the family by tailoring after her father's accident.
Challenge
At 13, Kavya was about to leave school to look after her siblings when the fees came due.
Transformation
A sponsor covered her fees and evening tuition; a volunteer mentor kept her aiming higher.

Today: First in her class in mathematics, now in class 11 and preparing for engineering entrance exams.

Arun S.

Sundarapuram · Scholarship 2021
Background
Son of a daily-wage construction worker; studied under a street light after the family's power was cut.
Challenge
Scored 92% in class 10, but college admission fees were far beyond the family's reach.
Transformation
Our scholarship paid his admission and a donated laptop opened up online learning.

Today: Second-year B.Sc. Computer Science student — and a weekend volunteer at our tuition centre.

Priya & Divya R.

Ukkadam · School kits since 2017
Background
Twin sisters raised by their grandmother, a flower seller at the morning market.
Challenge
One income could stretch to school supplies for one child — not two. One twin would have to stay home.
Transformation
School kits, uniforms and bus passes for both girls, renewed every June without fail.

Today: Both finished class 12 this year — Priya joins a nursing course, Divya a teacher-training college.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Everything sponsors, donors and families usually ask about our education support.

Who can apply for educational assistance?

Any school or college student from an economically disadvantaged family in Coimbatore district. Applications reach us through our volunteers, partner schools, or directly at our Ramanathapuram office — no application is turned away without a home visit.

How do I sponsor a child?

Call +91 93626 29234 or send a message from our contact page. We match you with a child, share their study plan, and set up a monthly contribution of ₹1,500. You receive progress updates and a letter from your child twice a year.

Can I donate books?

Gladly. We accept school textbooks, notebooks, stationery and good-condition storybooks at our office, Monday to Saturday. For large donations, call ahead and we will arrange collection.

How are beneficiaries selected?

A volunteer from the child's own neighbourhood visits the family, verifies income and school records, and presents the case to our education committee. Selection is based on need alone — never on religion, caste or community.

Can I volunteer as a teacher?

Yes — our after-school tuition centres and weekend workshops always need teachers and mentors. Register on our volunteer page and our Volunteer Coordinator will call you within 48 hours to match you to a centre near you.

Is my donation tax deductible?

Yes. Erakathin Uthavi is registered under Section 80G, and a receipt eligible for tax deduction is emailed to you within 48 hours of your donation.
